Towards Symbiosis in Knowledge Representation and Natural Language Processing for Structuring Clinical Practice Guidelines

چکیده
The successful adoption by clinicians of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) contained in clinical information systems requires efficient translation of free-text guidelines into computable formats. Natural language processing (NLP) has the potential to improve the efficiency of such translation. However, it is laborious to develop NLP to structure free-text CPGs using existing formal knowledge representations (KR). In response to this challenge, this vision paper discusses the value and feasibility of supporting symbiosis in text-based knowledge acquisition (KA) and KR. We compare two ontologies: (1) an ontology manually created by domain experts for CPG eligibility criteria and (2) an upper-level ontology derived from a semantic pattern-based approach for automatic KA from CPG eligibility criteria text. Then we discuss the strengths and limitations of interweaving KA and NLP for KR purposes and important considerations for achieving the symbiosis of KR and NLP for structuring CPGs to achieve evidence-based clinical practice.

Contextual Meta-Knowledge Acquisition from Corpora
This paper looks at the area of automatic acquisition of meta-knowledge for the structuring of very large knowledge bases-(VLKB). It is argued that we will rediscover the need in Natural Language Processing (NLP) for such large knowledge bases and that one possible method for structuring them eeciently lies in association-based statistics gathered from corpora. The discussion sets out the aims ...
متن کاملAutomatic Formalization of Clinical Practice Guidelines
Current efforts aim to incorporate knowledge from clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) into computer systems using sophisticated interchange formats. Due to their complexity, such formats require expensive manual formalization work. This paper presents a preliminary study of using natural language processing (NLP) to automatically formalize CPG recommendations. We developed a CPG representation ...
متن کاملHow can information extraction ease formalizing treatment processes in clinical practice guidelines?: A method and its evaluation
OBJECTIVE Formalizing clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for a subsequent computer-supported processing is a challenging, but burdensome and time-consuming task. Existing methods and tools to support this task demand detailed medical knowledge, knowledge about the formal representations, and a manual modeling. Furthermore, formalized guideline documents mostly fall far short in terms of readab...
متن کاملA Study of Applying Knowledge Modelling to Evidence-Based Guidelines
This paper reports on a case-study of applying the general purpose and widely accepted methodology CommonKADS to a clinical practice guideline. CommonKADS is focussed on obtaining a compact knowledge model. However, guidelines usually contain incomplete and ambiguous knowledge. So, the resulting knowledge model will be incomplete and we will need to detect what parts of the guideline knowledge ...
متن کاملControlled Natural Language for Clinical Practice Guidelines
Clinicians would benefit from decision support systems incorporating the knowledge of clinical practice guidelines. However, the unstructured form of the guidelines makes them unsuitable for formal representation. To remedy this shortcoming we translated a set of pediatric guidelines into Attempto Controlled English (ACE). An experienced pediatrician and a knowledge engineer assessed that ACE c...
